Lionel Messi has signed a two-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain.

The undisclosed deal is said to include a “large number” of PSG fan tokens.

Messi Receives Crypto Tokens

As part of a signing bonus for a two-year contract with French soccer club Paris Saint-Germain, Lionel Messi will receive a “large number” of the club’s PSG fan tokens, according to a report from Reuters.

Paris Saint-Germain said in a statement that the PSG tokens are part of Messi’s “welcome package,” or signing-on fee, and have been provided by Socios.com, the leading sports fan token platform.

While the exact details of the deal have not been disclosed, the club stated Messi had received a “larger number” of the tokens.

The PSG tokens give fans access to several perks, including choosing a motivational message on the dressing room wall before games and voting on key club decisions such as the goal of the season or the winners of the club’s end-of-season awards.

Additionally, token holders have also experienced unique, personal video calls from the team’s players, with even more exciting benefits planned in the coming weeks and months.

Since its launch in 2019, several other major European soccer teams have launched their own fan tokens via Socios.com. In January, AC Milan became the latest team to offer tokens, promising access to VIP rewards, promotions, and other unique experiences for token holders.

Since June, the PSG token has quadrupled in value amid rumors that the soccer legend would be transferring to Paris Saint-Germain. It is currently up over 240%, with tokens priced at $40.55 at the time of writing.

Messi receives ‘large number’ of crypto fan tokens as part of his PSG package

Football star Lionel Messi has received PSG fan tokens as part of his package at Paris Saint-Germain.

The dollar value of the tokens package isn’t known, but Paris Saint-Germain said it is “a large number” of tokens.

Football star Lionel Messi, who recently signed a two-year deal with the Paris Saint-Germain club after leaving FC Barcelona, has received crypto fan tokens as part of his new financial package.

Paris Saint-Germain announced the news on Thursday, saying that Messi “received a large number” of PSG fan tokens as part of his package and that he is the first player signing such a deal at the club.

PSG tokens are blockchain-based digital assets powered by crypto startup Socios.com. The startup generates a finite supply of PSG tokens, which give fans the right to vote on club-selected decisions.

It is not clear what percentage of Messi’s package includes PSG tokens. Socios CEO Alexandre Dreyfus declined to comment to The Block when reached. Messi’s total package is reportedly worth €40 million (nearly $47 million) per annum after taxes.

Paris Saint-Germain launched PSG tokens in February 2020 in partnership with Socios. The trading volume of PSG tokens has shot up this week given the Messi news. According to CoinGecko, PSG tokens had a trading volume of nearly $300 million in the last 24 hours. Over the last few days, PSG trading volumes have exceeded $1.2 billion, said Paris Saint-Germain. One PSG token is currently priced at around $42. The token is listed on several crypto exchanges, including Binance and Upbit Korea.

“Fully embracing Socios.com and $PSG Fan Tokens has proved a massive success for the Club,” said Marc Armstrong, chief partnerships officer of Paris Saint-Germain. “We have been able to engage with a new global audience, creating a significant digital revenue stream.”

Paris Saint-Germain is one of over 50 sporting organizations that have launched fan tokens with Socios.com.

Other notable clubs include FC Barcelona, Juventus, Manchester City, Arsenal AC Milan, and others. All fan tokens are built on the Chiliz blockchain, said Dreyfus.

Chiliz is a sister company of Socios.
